Company Information

A brief history

Piece by Piece Storage started at Babson College in 2004. Since then, we’ve expanded to provide moving services for people other than college students while remembering our roots. We’re pleased to announce that in 2012, Piece by Piece Storage has been selected as the exclusive summer storage provider to Boston College. We’re a privately-owned company based in West Newton and focus solely on schools in the Boston area. We feel this allows us to provide a better quality service than some of the larger companies that operate at colleges and universities nationwide.

How does your service work?

We strive to make our service as seamless and easy as possible. First, you sign up online through our website. You’ll receive a confirmation email within 24 hours (if you order over the weekend, the email will be sent on Monday) to confirm your details. Our movers will bring you moving supplies on one of two dates, and then pick up the items you intend to store from your dorm room on the date you select. We store these items in our climate-controlled warehouse throughout the summer and deliver them back to you before the start of the Fall Semester.

What makes your service different from your competitors?

Some of the larger companies act solely as middlemen. They organize the pickups, but hire contracted movers to handle all of the actual labor and storage. Oftentimes, they do not use the same mover each year, which can lead to issues during pickups and especially during deliveries, when movers who are new to the business are put in charge of managing operations at your school. Piece by Piece Storage is a division of a full-service moving company and we employ our regular full-time employees to manage the student storage portion of our business. If you need to reach us, you will call one of the people in our corporate headquarters; your call is not first directed to a hired call center. We are also able to offer more competitive pricing since we do not have to pay subcontractors and call centers.

Ordering Information

How do I place an order?

Log onto piecebypiecestorage.com and select your school at the bottom of the homepage. The website will direct you to a form where you can fill out all the relevant information we will need.

What do I need to place an order?

Piece By Piece Storage’s website will walk you through the signup process. At the end of the signup, you will be asked to enter your billing information.  Piece By Piece storage requires you to use a valid credit card (American Express, Visa, or MasterCard) to sign up, however any additional services and materials purchased or ordered may be paid for with cash or check.

How do I pay for my storage services?

You can pay by Cash, Check, Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.

My plans have changed. Can I cancel my account?

You sure can. We will send you a confirmation email to let you know that your account has been cancelled.  Unfortunately we cannot process any refunds on packing materials if you have already received them.  Any charges for storage, cleaning, or move assistance will be refunded, provided we are given 5 business days notice.

Supply Information

How do I get supplies to pack my items?

We offer supply distribution and delivery to on-campus locations. Supply distribution dates vary by school, so check your school’s section on our website.

I have final exams during the supply distribution period, so I might not be in my dorm when you make the delivery. What should I do?

We will have a table setup on campus throughout the day during the supply distribution dates. You can drop by and either pick the supplies up or tell the men at the table when you have some free time during the day and we’ll deliver the supplies to your mailroom.

Do I have to purchase boxes from you in order to use your service?

Unlike some of our competitors, we do not require the purchase of any materials in order to sign up for our service. You are welcome to use any boxes you may already have. You’ll be charged accordingly based on the size of the boxes you use. Visit our pricing section for more information.

Pickup, Storage, and Delivery Information

I won’t be able to be around during the pickup window. How will you be able to pick up my boxes?

You will need to find someone who will be able to hand your boxes over to us during the pickup window. A friend, roommate, or RA is a good place to start. When signing up, please notify us of this in the “Pickup Notes” section of our signup form. We’ll need that person’s name and mobile phone number in order to reach him or her on pickup day. DO NOT leave your boxes unattended in the hallway. For liability reasons, will be unable to pickup any boxes that are not signed for.

I don’t live in a dormitory on my college/university’s campus. Can you still pickup and deliver my belongings?

Yes, however there is a surcharge to pickup and deliver from and to locations that are not located on campus. Piece by Piece Storage charges a fee of $75 for off campus pickup and/or delivery.

What kind of items do you store?

We’ll store just about anything. Please view our pricing List for more information. If an item you have is not on that list, please contact us for a special quote.

Is there anything I shouldn’t store?

Yes. You should not store any cash, jewelry, or any other items of extraordinary value. You should also refrain from storing hazardous materials, liquids, or any flammable substances.

I’m not coming back to school in the fall, but I will be back at some time in the future. Can you store my belongings for a longer period than the summer?

We certainly can. We will bill for three-month storage periods. Your items are billed at the same price as they were in the spring.

When can I signup for pickup and delivery dates and times?

You can select your preferred pickup and delivery dates during the signup process. Please note that your date will not be confirmed until you receive a confirmation call from Piece by Piece storage. Unfortunately, some of our higher volume dates book up very quickly, so we may have to close dates more then a week prior to the scheduled pickup. Sign up early to ensure that you get the dates you need!

I don’t know where I’m going to be living in the fall. Can I still sign up for your service?

Of course! We’re aware that some of the colleges and universities that we service do not have their fall housing lists completed by the end of the spring semester. We will periodically email you throughout the summer to send you friendly reminders to sign up for a delivery date.

Some other companies say they are only offering pickup at a central location on campus and I have to bring my boxes to them. Is this the case with you?

No, our movers will come right to your dorm to pick your items up. Due to security concerns at many campuses, our men will have to be escorted through the dorms by our customers, so make sure that you (or someone you authorize) is available throughout the entire pickup window to let our men into the dorm.

Where is your storage facility located?

Our storage facilities are conveniently located in Newton, MA, just minutes from Interstate 90, as well as Woburn MA.

Shipping Information

How does your shipping service work?

Piece by Piece will pickup and ship your boxed items. When you are packing your boxes, make sure you write the address you’d like them shipped to. We’ll take the boxes back to our warehouse, create shipping labels, and arrange for them to be picked up. We will send you an email with the tracking numbers for each box. We can ship boxes anywhere in the continental United States, but unfortunately cannot offer shipping services to Alaska, Hawaii, or any international destination (including US territories such as Puerto Rico, Guam, etc.) Please note that boxes without shipping addresses will be placed into storage and additional fees will apply for us to retrieve them from storage and ship them at a later date.

How much does it cost to ship items?

Costs will vary depending on how much the boxes weigh and how far they’ll be travelling. Typical costs are $1.50-$2.00 per pound. Note that all shipping charges must be billed by credit card, as we will be unsure of the actual cost until we bring the items back to our warehouse, weigh them, and generate shipping labels.  We will contact you to inform  you of the charges before we send any of the boxes.

What can I ship?

Due to regulations imposed by our shipping carrier, we can only ship boxes, trunks, and suitcases.

Pricing & Liability Information

Do you provide any sort of liability protection on my storage items?

We offer $100 of coverage at no cost to you. Additional coverage may be purchased at a rate of $2.00 per $100 of coverage, up to a maximum of $1,000 per box and $5,000 per shipment.

How much will this service cost?

Piece by Piece storage charges you by the item for each item you intend to store. Please see the pricing section for specific information regarding costs of our service. The rate charged includes the pickup, storage, and redelivery of the item. Storage is billed on a seasonal cycle, with one season comprised of three months. You’re billed at the beginning of each season for the items in storage.
